![]() ![]() The Duke of York and the King of England would later grant others ownership of the land which would become the Province of New Jersey and the Province of Pennsylvania. The British captured much of the area in their war with the Dutch around 1664, and the majority of the conquered land became the Province of New York. Much of the area was part of New Netherland until the British exerted their control over the region. Along with the Chesapeake Colonies, this area now roughly makes up the Mid-Atlantic states. The bigger cities such as Philadelphia or New York had access to shipping hubs as well as a lot of craftsman.The Middle Colonies were a subset of the Thirteen Colonies in British America, located between the New England Colonies and the Southern Colonies. The coastline, the piedmonts in the middle. Their climate provided warm summers and cold winters. This area had good coastal harbors for shipping. How does this region compare to the others as far as geography and location? How did the land shape their way of life and economy? Back than religious groups would be the one to teach in schools. The girls were taught how to be useful around the household and social skills. Boys were taught how to trade, maybe a few languages, history, literature and natural science. The first school was also established in the same year. Their own family had to teach them until 1683 when the Pennsylvania law was created that all the children to be taught to read and write so they would be useful in trade. Back then only the rich were able to learn. The dutch from the middle colonies, decorated their houses with oil paintings, prints, including landscapes, religious topics and still lifes. What new ideas and art forms emerge? How did people learn about the land, advances, and each other? The Natives would use the English’s guns to raid other Native American tribes who didn’t have guns. The natives were responsible for teaching the English how to navigate around the area. ![]() As more English settled down, the number of Native Americans decreased. They taught the English their farming methods. The typical woman in colonial America was expected to run a household and attend to domestic duties such as sewing, preserving food, animal husbandry (which is breeding and caring for animals), cooking, cleaning, and raising children. What was the role of Women? Did they have rights? What was a day in their life like? Their everyday life was just being used by their masters for physical jobs. In the middle colonies the African Americans were treated as slaves with no rights. They would ship their excess goods to these places as well. Some people would find jobs in other places such as philadelphia and New York. What was the role of African Americans? Did they have rights? What was a day in their life like? In the middle colonies there was no main religion that everybody had to follow, all of the middle colonies were offering the non-dominating-religion contract. Were there conflicts because of religion? What role did religion play in their society? Was there a dominating belief? They also had blacksmiths, silversmiths, cobblers, wheelrights, wigmaker, and milliners. These colonies were known as the “breadbasket” because of the abundance of those resources. They also had very large amount of barley, wheat, oats, and rye. They had access to fertile land which was very beneficial to grow crops. They harvested crops, they raised livestock, they traded, shipped goods, and they mined. How did the resources contribute to their way of life? What resources were available and how were they able to establish sustainability? People elected their own government officials via voting. The colonies’ governments were all democratic, they all had a governor, governor's court, and a court system. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, Delaware and New York were founded by Peter Minuit, and New Jersey was founded by George Carteret. The settlers had to establish relationships with the Native Americans who were in control of the land to overcome these problems. Settlers of the middle colonies faced many challenges such as Native Americans, weather, and religious and ethnic diversity. What are 3 hardships your group faced? How were they overcome? The good living locations attracted diverse businesses, and New York and Philadelphia became important ports. The Middle Colonies also had very fertile land. Plentiful forests attracted the lumbering and shipbuilding industries to the Middle Colonies as well. The middle colonies were important distribution centers in the English mercantile system.
